Hi, everyone!
I’m Anna Egida, an artist and illustrator. A person who loves drawing cities and everything connected with them. I would like to invite you to my online course called “characters in the city”.

Many people panic when they think about drawing people. Why ? Because a human being is something complicated, and it’s not even about anatomy. How can one draw a person not simply looking alike, but showing a character, an individuality at the same time? How to grasp the personality?
These are a lot of questions I’d been trying to answer for a very long time.
I had been studying the variety of characters, looking for that particular clue that would reveal the exact method of showing the person’s identity.
And I found it indeed! J That is the thing I’m going to share with you during my online course.
For me each person is the main character
Each of you is the main character of your own life, your story, that’s what I am convinced in. The thing is that we all have different personalities. Some of us are expressive, bold and eye-catching, others are so fine, that one has to look and listen really close in order to reach them.
So let us learn how to look closer. To see the person beyond the looks, at the same time portraying this inner essence with the help of details of the appearance.
Sounds complicated? Never mind, you’ll see what I mean during the course.
Character without a portrait
We do not see people’s faces in the city, since we don’t come really close, or try to look them in the eye. I’ll tell you more, the character does not imply an anatomically correctly drawn face or figure. What it is, is a movement, a silhouette, properly caught.
As for me, what tells me more about the person are the gestures, the way they move, their set-up, but not really their look or facial expression.
Drawing faces is hard, so many people refuse to draw people at all. That’s a pity… There certainly is an option to show the personality without any special portrait skills. This is exactly what we are going to learn to do.
My method during this course is to teach you to grasp the human personality, not detalizing the face.
Yes, I believe that one can tell a lot about the person, without going into physiognomic details.

Many people know me as a huge fan of markers. However, the “Characters in the City” online course does not imply the usage of markers at all. We will draw with a felt-brush pen and water-colors.
My Characters
Who are my students
Absolutely everyone! It doesn’t matter whether you already have some experience in drawing or not. Sketching is the world available to everyone and I’ll guide you through it. Together we will work on forming your personal style.
So, dear friends, I’m looking forward to seeing you at my “ Characters in the City” course. You are all welcome to sign up!

Online-course program
As usual, we are going to move from simple to more complex. The course is divided into the semantic blocks which we are going to study step by step.
Anatomy without Anatomy
We will study a non-anatomic approach to the human figure. We’ll learn how to show proportions, find joints properly, what is the relationship between form and content
Things and Clothes
We will try to find the character not only in the figure itself, but also in the person’s belongings.
Pose and Movements
We’ll go through all typical city poses, starting from walking people. Then we’ll pass to the sitting ones. We will study some typical city situations: using a cell-phone, metro, sitting in a café, buying something in a shop…
Groups of People
Then we will draw some groups of characters. We’ll see how to arrange the group on our drawing, the way it is formed. How to distribute attention in order to keep the whole picture together.
A Crowd
Who can imagine a city with no crowded streets? We will draw the crowd of people not as a shapeless bunch of objects on the piece of paper. We’ll understand how many emphases should be made while portraying a crowd, how and where we should make them.
Learning format
This course cannot be just watched, as a TV-show. You will definitely have to work. Although the tasks will be easy, one will have to complete them and show the results all the time in order to get critics, comments, as well as some energy and motivation for new challenges.
What makes this course different from any other is that I never just leave you there with the video files. This is a full-scale distance learning.
During the whole month you’ll be getting my comments, while I will be monitoring the results of every student.
List of Materials
- Faber Castle Pitt Artist Pen Brush felt-brush pen;
- Water-color, a medium set. Pick your favorite colors. As for me, I use quite a limited palette of colors;
- Squirrel-hair brushes, big size (#8 and more), for filling large silhouettes;
- Synthetic round brushes #5,6, 2 and a flat one with round sides #4. Natural brushes don’t provide the required flexibility. Actually, we are going to use the brush as a marker, not paint with it;
- Paper. Lots of paper! Usual office paper will work for the first tasks. In order to complete the water-color tasks one will need special water-color paper, medium or short grain. What matters is that its texture lets us work with details properly.
